Brandi Carlile -10/24/19

Ah what a night. So first off, this isn’t the typical show I’ve attended in the past. I was always a metal head but I’m mellowing out in my old age.  The show was great.

Brandi is a great story teller and I really dig that approach to performing. She connected on a personal level talking about her family, close relationships with the band members, Halloween, and inspirations for her songs.

She has a smile on her face all night that told me she truly enjoys performing. Her huge voice seems to come out effortlessly. Sometimes her mouth looked like it was barely moving. You see some singers with their mouths as wide open as it goes trying to hit that note, but Brandi seems to have a real gift.

She’s a good guitar player, a good piano player (though she likes to say she’s not), and an unbelievable singer. I took my wife to the show and she had never previously listened to Brandi Carlile. She now wants all her albums.

She told a great story about refusing to use teleprompters which prompted Elton John to see her Joni Mitchell cover show because he hoped she’d screw up. This had the crowd laughing and it was the lead in to her cover of “Case of You” which I’ll admit I was not familiar with at all but loved.

She played a lot of songs including her hits The Story, The Joke, and Mother – this one brought tears to the eyes of many.

She talked about how the band formed due to their love of harmonies and then they showed off their skills. The band was fantastic all night. And how cool is it seeing a Cello player these days? In one of the camera close ups on the “jumbo-tron” as she called it, you could see how worn down one of her acoustic guitars was. I love that. You can tell it’s something she’s played for a long time. Probably wrote many songs on it.

They ended the night with Party of One which I wish I had a recording off. She was amazing and the crowd was dead silent as we all watched in awe. Definitely a different kind of show than my previous outings over the years, but it truly was fantastic!

Not a great photo, but I didn’t take many videos. Too busy enjoying the show.

About Rob the Concert Guy

I love live music and will pretty much go to just about any concert. I've made a lot of friends because of my willingness to put that extra ticket to good use. I've been to hundreds of shows and finally I decided I should start writing about them. Better late than never I guess.
