July 8, 2023 was the first night of the tour for Motionless in White and In This Moment with special guests From Ashes to New and Fit For a King. They decided to start it off in CT at the Mohegan Sun arena. Now, when Mohegan Sun says 630pm on the ticket, they mean it. We got there about 650pm which was just in time to hear From Ashes to New’s last song. It was a good tune. Wish we could’ve heard more.
Fit For a King played next. My overall view is – meh. Nothing special. Lots of screaming which I don’t mind when done right. But it didn’t do it for me.
In This Moment was next. I really like this band and wish I was more of a mega fan as I sadly didn’t know all the songs. They started out with Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing playing before that cut off and the curtain dropped to reveal the stage. They did play Blood, Adrenalize (during this song, the singer used some lame smoke gun. Seemed out of place), Big Bad Wolf, and of course closed with Whore (great tune). But they did not do Roots, Sex Metal Barbie, Black Wedding, Sick Like Me, I Would Die for You, or In the Air Tonight (unless I totally spaced out or I’m stupid).
They had quite the stage set up, lots of back up dancers, some costume changes, and a great lights and pyros show. With the set and costume changes, the band did a lot of music in between songs to fill the voids. The singer (Maria Brink) didn’t move around much. She was usually up on a pedestal or riser and stayed up there most of the night. Sometimes it seemed that the various masks she wore muffled the vocals, but maybe that was just me (and Frank who rocked out with me and said the same thing). No again, unless I totally spaced out, I think they only did about 7 songs. But if I’m missing a bunch, let me know.
Motionless In White closed the show. I wondered why they’d start their tour in Connecticut. Perhaps it’s not a “major market” because their sound dudes were definitely working out some sound issues tonight. They had a bit of a rough start where some of the backing tracks started too quick, but they fixed that pretty fast. Before one tune they had to call “psych!” and leave the stage to fix something. Vocals cut out a couple times and the volume fluctuated a bit. But overall it was good.
Once again, the mosh pits are alive and well. I was never a fan of moshing or crowd surfing, but since I wasn’t on the floor (by choice) I could just watch and laugh. I was a little surprised by the women/girls in the pit. But they held their own against some of the burly douche bags. In one instance, there was a giant bearded dude in a white and blue shirt vs a tiny girl in black pants and white tank top…the dude disappeared pretty early. She rocked all night. If they happen to read this, hopefully my lame descriptions are enough for them to know I’m talking about them.
But back to the show. They played for about an hour, and were much heavier than I expected. They’re pretty heavy to begin with on recordings, but they brought the heat. I was surprised to hear that they’ve been a band for about 20 years as I would’ve thought they were in their twenties. But then again, I totally suck at guessing people’s ages.
I’d definitely like to see Ashes to New again since I missed all but one song, and I’d love to see In This Moment again. They have too many good songs that they didn’t play. While they claim to be “co-headliners” I don’t think In This Moment had as much time. Decisions were made I guess.
As far as Motionless In White goes, I don’t know if I’d see them again anytime soon until after a new album comes out and if it’s any good. Heard all I wanted to hear. I think I captured their setlist. If not, well, that sucks…
